Chefs Against Fascism Everywhere (C.A.F.E.) October 26

A Call to ACTION

Sean Sherman

A CALL TO ACTION for Chefs, Restaurants and Food Industry workers to host dinners nationwide this October 26, 2026 to Get Out The Vote and 86 Fascism.

Visit CAFE.vote now!

Design by Studio Number One

In the kitchen, when something has to go, we 86 it. We cut it from the menu and it’s gone.

On Monday, October 26, we are calling on as many restaurants as we can to join us to organize dinners across the nation to help unite and protect our food industry workers ahead of the midterm vote. Let’s 86 fascism together.

I’ve created CAFE.vote as a website space to unite, organize, and amplify our voices together. It is now live and working, so please visit and sign up if you are a restaurant owner, chef, food service worker, or ally. That includes anybody who wants to help amplify the need to vote wisely and against those that support authoritarian actions we’ve seen committed in our country this year against farm workers, food processors, restaurant workers, grocery workers, institutional food industry workers and basically everybody who has been targeted by ICE because of the color of their skin.

October 26 is coming fast, we know. We're asking every person who grows, picks, packs, processes, hauls, cooks, serves, or sells food in this country to help set a table on the same night, eight days before the midterms. One night, kitchens across the nation with the same message: 86 Fascism, Unite the Industry, Get Out the Vote!

Here’s why.

Minneapolis Strong: The Twin Cities Say ICE Out! - The Handbuilt City
Downtown Minneapolis, MN January 2026

Last winter I wrote here about what was happening in Minneapolis, MN. Operation Metro Surge sent thousands of federal agents into Minneapolis and St. Paul. They called it immigration enforcement. We lived it as a violent occupation, our city under siege and our community threatened with violence, imprisonment and death.

Restaurants felt it first. Cooks stopped coming to shifts because they were afraid to leave the house. Dishwashers who had worked the same line for ten years disappeared from the schedule. Regulars stopped coming in. The mercados on Lake Street went quiet. Somali cafes that are usually full at midnight sat empty. Owners turned their back doors into safe pickup points. Our group chats went from talking about specials to talking about where agents had been seen that morning and who was in need of food relief or safe transportation.

Then the killing started. On January 7, an ICE agent shot and killed Renée Good, a U.S. citizen and a mother, in South Minneapolis. On January 24, federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, during a protest. Two of our neighbors were killed by our own government on our own streets in the same month.

I keep coming back to how fast it happened. A whole industry ground to a halt in a matter of weeks because fear was used on purpose, by people who wanted us afraid and obedient.

I wrote back then that weaponizing hunger is an authoritarian tactic, but it can be defeated by feeding people and standing with them. I still believe that. But feeding people isn’t enough on its own. We also have to vote while we still can.

Sen. Tina Smith and Sean Sherman, January 29, 2026

In January right after Alex Pretti’s murder I put out a call for action on my Substack. I asked the food industry to help sign a letter to Congress, asking our leaders not to hand more money to the Department of Homeland Security while it was terrorizing our neighbors and citizens were being murdered and brutalized with no accountability.

2,800 of you signed. Line cooks. Farmers. Servers. Owners. Food writers. On January 29, I carried those signatures to Senator Tina Smith in Washington, D.C., that same day, the Senate blocked the DHS funding.

It was a real win at that moment. It mattered but it didn’t last. On March 5, Congress passed H.R. 7744 and fully funded DHS anyway.

If we want the people in power to stop treating our workers as disposable, we have to change who holds that power. Our next shot is this November 3, the midterm vote.

Let me be clear about what C.A.F.E. is. Chefs Against Fascism Everywhere is not a party. It’s not a campaign arm for anybody. It’s nonpartisan in the truest sense of the word.

We don’t care what letter sits next to your name or what color your campaign poster is. We care whether you stand with working people or against them. C.A.F.E. stands against fascism. Against authoritarianism. Against racism. Against a billionaire class that buys elections, writes the rules, and then tells the rest of us to be grateful for scraps.

If you’re a Republican who believes in the Constitution, in due process, and in treating every person like a human being and has the backbone to stand up for what is right and break party loyalty, then you have a seat at our table. If you’re a Democrat who folds every time it gets hard, we’ll call you out too. That’s the line. It isn’t left or right. It’s humanity or cruelty.

Our tagline says it plain. Feed the resistance. Save democracy.

Nopales Farmers in CDMX, January 2026

Look at who actually puts food on America’s table. Farm workers picking lettuce at dawn. Crews on the line in meatpacking and poultry plants. People in canneries, bakeries, and processing facilities. Truck drivers and warehouse crews. Line cooks, dishwashers, servers, and bussers. Caterers and food truck owners. The folks running school cafeterias, hospital kitchens, and senior meal programs. Grocery workers. Farmers market vendors. Seed savers.

This industry runs on immigrants, people of color, with many LGBTQ community among us. Some may be undocumented, but they are still humans trying to make a better life for themselves and their families and should be treated as such and given paths towards citizenship. Many immigrants are the most essential workers we have and the least protected. When they raid an immigrant community, they raid our kitchens. When they deport workers, they empty fields and shutter restaurants. Every attack on our immigrant communities is an attack on our whole industry. There is no version of the American food system that works without them and the actions that ICE was taking were going to collapse not only our industry, but our entire economy.

I’m an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota. As Lakota, there isn’t much patience for descendants of immigrants calling other immigrants illegal while on stolen land. Our food systems rely on diversity and we must learn to celebrate diversities rather than attempting to homogenize or ethnically cleanse out of xenophobia.

Rob Kinneen, Pyet DeSpain, Valerie Segrest, Luke and Linda Black Elk, Sean Sherman, Holly Holt

Here’s the ask. On Monday, October 26, sign up on CAFE.vote and host a C.A.F.E. dinner. Hundreds of tables, same night, all across the country.

We picked a Monday on purpose. A lot of restaurants are closed Mondays. Open that empty dining room. And this isn’t only for restaurants. Host it at a farm stand, a food truck, a coffee shop, a brewery, a union hall, a church basement, a school cafeteria, a community kitchen, or your own backyard. If you feed people, you can host. Then share your food, your inclusiveness and your voices loudly across social media.

Invite your community. Bring in local organizers and immigrant rights groups. Bring in the get-out-the-vote groups already doing the work in your town. Invite local leaders, influencers, and anyone with a microphone who will use it for good. Let the people who have been carrying this fight speak.

Then get to work. Here’s what can happen at your table:

Make a plan to vote early. Early voting is open in most states by then. Check registration at the table. Look up polling places. Pick a day to go together that week.

Bring three. Every guest commits to bringing three more people to vote.

Share stories without names. Workers write what this year has been like on a card and drop it in a jar. The host reads a few out loud. People get heard without being exposed.

Protect workers. Set up a Know Your Rights table with a local immigrant rights group. Run a supply drive for families hit by raids. Give a percentage of the night’s sales to an immigrant legal defense fund.

Build for Election Day. Recruit poll workers. Write postcards to infrequent voters over dessert. Put the C.A.F.E. poster in your window and leave it up through November 3. Then tag three more places and ask them to host.

A few house rules keep everyone safe. Dinner is open to everyone, period. Food is never tied to registering or voting. Nobody gets asked about immigration status. Take photos of the table, not people’s faces, unless they say yes. Candidates are welcome as guests, but no fundraising, and if you invite one candidate in a race, feel free to invite their opponents too. And 86 only ever goes next to the words fascism, racism, and billionaires.

Supporters are counted only in total by state and by job. Never named. Your presence still counts. You can cook, drive, organize, and tell your story. This movement needs you, the country needs you if you care about humanity.

CAFE the Video Game (Coming Soon?) ;)

The dinner is the kickoff. Election Day is the rush. And nobody handles a rush like a kitchen.

Open your space as a staging point for people to go vote together. Coordinate rides to the polls for folks who need them. Pledge paid time off for your staff to vote, and post that pledge in your window. That’s legal everywhere. It’s not buying votes. It’s respecting your people.

Adopt a polling place and send food to the poll workers. They work long days for little pay so the rest of us can have a democracy. Feed the workers, never the voters standing in line. Some states have strict rules about that, so keep it clean.

If you haven’t checked your own registration, do it today. Several state deadlines land this month. CAFE.vote links you straight to HeadCount, a nonpartisan resource, to register, check your status, and find your polling place.

Fear shut my city down once. What brought it back wasn’t a press release or a politician. It was people showing up for each other. Cooks covering shifts for coworkers who couldn’t leave home. Owners driving staff to and from work. Neighbors delivering groceries to families afraid to open the door. That’s what this industry does best. We take care of people every single day because we care.

Now we need to do it at scale. Imagine every farm, every packing plant, every kitchen, every food truck, and every cafeteria in this country standing together on the same night. That’s not a protest, it’s a movement. And it’s a voting bloc that nobody in power can afford to ignore.

The people pushing authoritarianism are counting on us to be tired, confused and scared. They’re counting on us to stay in our kitchens and keep our heads down. Let’s show them what an industry looks like when it stands up.

Go to CAFE.vote. Sign up your space. Sign up as a supporter. Host a dinner on October 26. Bring three, bring your community, celebrate humanity together. Then vote, and help everyone around you do the same. Let’s vote this nation back toward humanity and sanity.

Feed the resistance. Save democracy.

86 fascism.

The Racial Purge

The Failed Spectacle of Operation ‘Racial Purge’ by Sean Sherman

Or how Minneapolis became a modern day Sundown Town in 2026

Read on Substack

What we have witnessed over the past 60 days in Minneapolis was never about immigration enforcement for the safety of Americans.

This was a deliberate, calculated assault on communities of color masquerading as public safety. And as I write this from the headquarters of our Indigenous non profit NATIFS (North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems) I can tell you that every person in our organization and thousands across the Twin Cities understands this the same way. This was a racial purge brought on by our own federal government.

Life After Good Was Murdered in Minnesota

The Trump administration understands escalation and thrives on it. It’s part of the plan.

  • Send more agents

  • Provoke confrontation

  • Allow violence

  • Justify more control

Violence creates urgency. Urgency creates permission. Permission creates normalization.

And here is the part people need to hear clearly.

We are now hearing reports from hotel workers that ICE has blocked rooms across Minneapolis–Saint Paul through May.

Let that sink in.

U.S. Medals of Dishonor by Sean Sherman

America never runs out of ways to gaslight history.

Last week, Pete Hegseth, the former Fox talking head who’s now somehow Secretary of War in Trump’s Amerikkka 2.0, looked into a camera and announced that the U.S. soldiers who slaughtered Lakota families including women, children, elderly and babies at Wounded Knee in 1890 will keep their Medals of Honor. According to him, this decision is “final” and “no longer up for debate.” Translation: sit down, shut up, and salute a massacre.

Here’s Black Elk’s first hand account of the events of that day in 1890, it’s a little long but an important eye witness account from a Lakota relative:

“That evening before it happened, I went into Pine Ridge and heard these things, and while I was there, soldiers started searching for where the Big Foots were. These made about five hundred soldiers that were there the next morning. When I saw them starting I felt that something terrible was going to happen. That night I could hardly sleep at all. I walked around most of the night.

In the morning I went out after my horses, and while I was out I heard shooting off toward the east, and I knew from the sound that it must be wagon-guns going off. The sounds went right through my body, and I felt that something terrible would happen.

When I reached camp with the horses, a man rode up to me and said: “Hey—hey—hey! The people that are coming are fired on! I know it!”

I saddled up my buckskin and put on my sacred shirt. It was one I had made to be worn by no one but myself. It had a spotted eagle outstretched on the back of it, and the daybreak star was on the left shoulder, because when facing south that shoulder is toward the east. Across the breast, from the left shoulder to the right hip, was the flaming rainbow, and there was another rainbow around the neck, like a necklace, with a star at the bottom. At each shoulder, elbow, and wrist was an eagle feather; and over the whole shirt were red streaks of lightning. You will see that this was from my great vision, and you will know how it protected me that day.

I painted my face all red, and in my hair I put one eagle feather for the One Above. It did not take me long to get ready, for I could still hear the shooting over there.

I started out alone on the old road that ran across the hills to Wounded Knee. I had no gun. I carried only the sacred bow of the west that I had seen in my great vision. I had gone only a little way when a band of young men came galloping after me. The first two who came up were Loves War and Iron Wasichu. I asked what they were going to do, and they said they were just going to see where the shooting was. Then others were coming up, and some older men.

We rode fast, and there were about twenty of us now. The shooting was getting louder. A horseback from over there came galloping very fast toward us, and he said: “Hey—hey—hey! They have murdered them!” Then he whipped his horse and rode away faster toward Pine Ridge.

In a little while we had come to the top of the ridge where, looking to the east, you can see for the first time the monument and the burying ground on the little hill where the church is.

That is where the terrible thing started. Just south of the burying ground on the little hill a deep dry gulch runs about east and west, very crooked, and it rises westward to nearly the top of the ridge where we were. It had no name, but the Wasichus sometimes call it Battle Creek now. We stopped on the ridge not far from the head of the dry gulch. Wagon-guns were still going off over there on the little hill, and they were going off again where they hit along the gulch.

There was much shooting down yonder, and there were many cries, and we could see cavalrymen scattered over the hills ahead of us. Cavalrymen were riding along the gulch and shooting into it, where the women and children were running away and trying to hide in the gullies and the stunted pines.

A little way ahead of us, just below the head of the dry gulch, there were some women and children who were huddled under a clay bank, and some cavalrymen were there pointing guns at them. We stopped back behind the ridge, and I said to the others: “Take courage. These are our relatives. We will try to get them back.” Then we all sang a song which went like this:

A thunder being nation I am, I have said. A thunder being nation I am, I have said: You shall live. You shall live. You shall live. You shall live.

Then I rode over the ridge and the others after me, and we were crying: “Take courage! It is time to fight!” The soldiers who were guarding our relatives shot at us and then ran away fast, and some more cavalrymen on the other side of the gulch did too. We got our relatives and sent them across the ridge to the northwest where they would be safe.I had no gun, and when we were charging, I just held the sacred bow out in front of me with my right hand. The bullets did not hit us at all.

We found a little baby lying all alone near the head of the gulch. I could not pick her up just then, but I got her later and some of my people adopted her. I just wrapped her up tighter in a shawl that was around her and left her there. It was a safe place, and I had other work to do.

The soldiers had run eastward over the hills where there were some more soldiers, and they were off their horses and lying down. I told the others to stay back, and I charged upon them holding the sacred bow out toward them with my right hand. They all shot at me, and I could hear bullets all around me, but I ran my horse right close to them, and then swung around. Some soldiers across the gulch began shooting at me too, but I got back to the others and was not hurt at all.

By now many other Lakotas, who had heard the shooting, were coming up from Pine Ridge, and we all charged on the soldiers. They ran eastward toward where the trouble began. We followed down along the dry gulch, and what we saw was terrible. Dead and wounded women and children and little babies were scattered all along there where they had been trying to run away.

The soldiers had followed along the gulch, as they ran, and murdered them there. Sometimes they were in heaps because they had huddled together, and some were scattered all along.

Sometimes bunches of them had been killed and torn to pieces where the wagon-guns hit them. I saw a little baby trying to suck its mother, but she was bloody and dead.

There were two little boys at one place in this gulch. They had guns and they had been killing soldiers all by themselves. We could see the soldiers they had killed. The boys were all alone there, and they were not hurt. These were very brave little boys.

When we drove the soldiers back, they dug themselves in, and we were not enough people to drive them out from there. In the evening they marched off up Wounded Knee Creek, and then we saw all that they had done there.

Men, women, and children were heaped and scattered all over the flat at the bottom of the little hill where the soldiers had their wagon-guns, and westward up the dry gulch all the way to the high ridge, the dead women and children and babies were scattered.

When I saw this I wished that I had died too, but I was not sorry for the women and children. It

It was better for them to be happy in the other world, and I wanted to be there too. But before I went there I wanted to have revenge. I thought there might be a day, and we should have revenge.” - Black Elk, 1890

The American Way Of Silencing And Oppression Is Nothing New If You Are Black Or Brown

Shut the F*ck Up by Sean Sherman

The American Way Of Silencing And Oppression Is Nothing New If You Are Black Or Brown

excerpt:

The Shock of Being Silenced

The empire grows stronger and voices like Colbert, Kimmel, or basically anybody who says out loud that Charlie Kirk was a racist piece of white trash is being thrown aside through government pressure. Americans are acting like they just realized censorship can happen to white people also. While the media (and who owns the media nowadays?) is busy tiptoeing around the fall of democracy and ignoring the blatant authoritarian actions of the current White House agenda, Trump and clowns are busy defining their own brand of “cancel culture” wrapped in the typical nationalistic patriotic bullshit shielded by hypocritical Christian beliefs. We should all know by now it’s just more distraction to throw fuel on the fire of their division war and keep the conversation away from exposing the cheetoh stained Epstein files.

In reality, America as a government has been silencing people since 1776. The only thing new now is who’s feeling the muzzle. It’s not just Indigenous people, Black folks, immigrants, and the poor anymore. Now it’s nipping at privileged voices who always assumed their mic was untouchable.

Your History Class Was a F*cking Lie | #NOMOAR

Your History Class Was a F*cking Lie by Sean Sherman

(Or: How the American Educational System Has Always Been a Racist Propaganda Program)

Read on Substack

👉This is all why I’m working on building NOMOAR — the National Online Museum of American Racism. (in my spare time that is). Not to just “educate” but to interrupt the dangerous narratives we have all been duped as truths and to create not only an archive, but also a much need mirror of American identity.

NOMOAR is what happens when we stop waiting for school boards and start telling the truth ourselves. Education doesn’t need a monetary component we can start by teaching truths at home and giving our children the tools to critically think for themselves when presented with alternative perspectives and untruths.

My Vision:

  • Crowdsourced local history maps. Zoom into your hometown and see the redlining maps, the sundown town signs, the massacre sites, the stolen land deeds and any narrative worth sharing so we may never forget.

  • User-submitted exhibits — family stories, archival documents, oral histories, newspaper clippings — all validated by community, not just institutions.

  • Interactive timelines that connect racist laws, uprisings, acts of resistance, and how they relate to today’s policies.

  • Virtual and traveling exhibits that can reeducate Americans everywhere and challenge the status quo of the whitewashed histories we have been force fed for so long.

  • Tools for teachers and organizers — truth packs to bring real history into classrooms, workshops, or kitchen tables.

This isn’t about replacing a physical museum in D.C. It’s about building one that actually tells the truth — and lives in your pocket.

Because if we’re not documenting these truths now, they’ll get erased again.

We can’t afford another generation raised on lies and we definitely can’t remain silent as we watch entire histories get silenced for the comfort of white people.

Want to help build the NOMOAR platform? I created a GoFundMe to raise funds to create the base website, but it will need immense help to become reality. So what can you do outside of donating?

Just reach out and let’s start a conversation. The only way to Make America Great Again is to be truthful with our past and move forward with understanding and empathy.

Oh and Fuck Trump…

ADOPTION TRUTH

As the single largest unregulated industry in the United States, adoption is viewed as a benevolent action that results in the formation of “forever families.”
The truth is that it is a very lucrative business with a known sales pitch. With profits last estimated at over $1.44 billion dollars a year, mothers who consider adoption for their babies need to be very aware that all of this promotion clouds the facts and only though independent research can they get an accurate account of what life might be like for both them and their child after signing the adoption paperwork.
