New study confirms ancient human footprints in New Mexico date back 23,000 years

 Dario Radley  June 22, 2025

A newly published study in Science Advances provides the strongest evidence to date that ancient human tracks found at White Sands National Park, New Mexico, are approximately 23,000 years old. If confirmed, the find could dramatically change the history of human migration to North America, placing humans on the continent during the Last Glacial Maximum, thousands of years earlier than previously believed.

The footprints, first reported in 2021, were excavated in 2019 by a team from Bournemouth University in collaboration with the U.S. National Park Service. Early radiocarbon dating of seeds and pollen found in overlying and underlying sediment layers indicated an age between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago. However, these findings were challenged. Some critics argued that using aquatic plants like Ruppia cirrhosa, which absorb ancient carbon from water, could result in artificially old dates.

To address these concerns, the new team, led by University of Arizona archaeologist and geologist Vance Holliday, returned to the site in 2022 and 2023. Instead of dating the plant material, they radiocarbon dated ancient lakebed mud. They sent the samples to two independent laboratories, both of which reported the same range of ages: 20,700 to 22,400 years ago.

Together, scientists now have 55 radiocarbon dates on three types of materials—seeds, pollen, and mud—all pointing to the same time period. “It’s a remarkably consistent record,” Holliday said. “You get to the point where it’s really hard to explain all this away.”

The footprints were found in streambeds which once flowed into an ancient lake called Lake Otero, in a region now dominated by gypsum sand dunes. Holliday first visited White Sands in 2012 and contributed geological data that was utilized to date the tracks and made him a co-author of the original and current study.

Doctoral student Jason Windingstad, who worked with Holliday on the most recent fieldwork, described seeing the prints as a profound moment. “It basically contradicts everything that we’ve been taught about the peopling of North America,” he said.

The discovery challenges the long-standing Clovis-first theory, which held that humans arrived on the continent around 13,000 years ago.  While some scientists still question the evidence—particularly the lack of tools or settlement—Holliday argues that such artifacts wouldn’t necessarily be present.  “These people lived by their artifacts, and they were far away from where they could get replacement material,” he said. “They’re not just randomly dropping artifacts.”

With multiple dating methods and separate lab confirmations now supporting the timeline, the White Sands footprints offer compelling evidence that humans came to the Americas far earlier than had been believed.

Theory: When We Met Other Human Species

By Trace L Hentz

We are ANCIENT ANCIENT. Yes, indeed.  Older than we know, or were told... which is why so many confusing theories are out there, and some people make money on degrees and titles with their theories.

👇 THIS:  (YOUTUBE) Some commenters have pointed out that calling Neanderthals and Denisovans “other hominin species” in this episode breaks the rules of the biological species concept (BSC), which says if two things can interbreed, then they’re the same species.  Some paleoanthropologists would agree.  They consider both Neanderthals and Denisovans to be subspecies of Homo sapiens, rather than separate species.  Other experts would say that Neanderthals have a set of features that make them clearly distinguishable from Homo sapiens, putting them outside the range of variation we include in our species.  And we hardly know the Denisovans - like we said in the video, they don’t even have a scientific name yet.  The incredible thing about this is that we can even think about applying the BSC to fossils at all.  The BSC is a species concept based on living organisms, and it’s only been within the last two decades or so that we’ve had the ancient DNA and the technology to test hypotheses about interbreeding in extinct groups.  And it’s not the only way to define a species, either, so it will likely be a while (if ever) before anthropologists decide whether we’re a different species, subspecies, or population from the Neanderthals and Denisovans. (Darcy Shapiro, PhD, script editor)

More Theory? GHOST DNA?

YES...Ghost DNA...

About 50,000 years ago, ancient humans in what is now West Africa apparently procreated with another group of ancient humans that scientists didn't know existed.  There aren't any bones or ancient DNA to prove it, but researchers say the evidence is in the genes of modern West Africans.  They analyzed genetic material from hundreds of people from Nigeria and Sierra Leone and found signals of what they call "ghost" DNA from an unknown ancestor.

The findings on ghost DNA, published in the journal Science Advances, further complicate the picture of how Homo sapiens—or modern humans—evolved away from other human relatives. The scientists analyzed the genomes of 405 West Africans.  Sriram Sankararaman, a computational biologist at UCLA, says they used a statistical model to flag parts of the DNA.  The technique "goes along a person's genome and pulls out chunks of DNA which we think are likely to have come from a population that is not modern human."

50,000 Years Ago—Who Slept With Whom?

The unusual DNA found in West Africa isn't associated with either Neanderthals or Denisovans.  Sankararaman and his study co-author, Arun Durvasula, think it comes from a yet-to-be-discovered group.

"We don't have a clear identity for this archaic group," Sankararaman says. "That's why we use the term 'ghost.' It doesn't seem to be particularly closely related to the groups from which we have genome sequences from."  The scientists think the interbreeding happened about 50,000 years ago, roughly the same time that Neanderthals were breeding with modern humans elsewhere in the world.  It's not clear whether there was a single interbreeding "event," though, or whether it happened over an extended period of time.

The unknown group "appears to have split off from the ancestors of modern humans a little before when Neanderthals split off from our ancestors," he says.

So what happened to this mysterious group of ancient humans? Scientists aren't totally sure. They might have died off, or they might have eventually been completely subsumed into modern humans.

Racism is 'embedded in American archaeology': Q&A with Cree-Métis archaeologist Paulette Steeves

Archaeologist Paulette Steeves is working to rewrite global human history for Indigenous people | Walking with Ancients

Recently discovered evidence is changing the story of when humans arrived in the Americas.  Steeves isn’t surprised: she believes Indigenous people have been here for more than 100,000 years.

Most archaeologists in North America have spent the last several decades believing that humans arrived in the Americas around 12,000 - 14,000 years ago by crossing the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska.

But Paulette Steeves isn't most archaeologists.

Steeves is a professor at Algoma University and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History, Healing and Reconciliation, and her work focuses on the Pleistocene history of the Western Hemisphere.

She believes that Indigenous people were present in the Americas far earlier, and has created a database of North and South American archaeological sites that are thought to date from 250,000 to 12,000 years before present day.

Steeves is featured in Walking with Ancients, a documentary from The Nature of Things that explores how new archaeological discoveries are challenging our understanding of when the first people arrived in North America, featuring findings from dig sites from the Yukon to Mexico.

In an interview with documentary director Robin Bicknell, Steeves shares her story, and explains how conversations about colonialism and racism have largely been absent from archaeological research, impacting the way it's been funded, presented and taught.

ADOPTION TRUTH

As the single largest unregulated industry in the United States, adoption is viewed as a benevolent action that results in the formation of “forever families.”
The truth is that it is a very lucrative business with a known sales pitch. With profits last estimated at over $1.44 billion dollars a year, mothers who consider adoption for their babies need to be very aware that all of this promotion clouds the facts and only though independent research can they get an accurate account of what life might be like for both them and their child after signing the adoption paperwork.
